3. Last but not least, I have an exciting announcement about my volunteer work with the Young Survival Coalition...
Young Survival Coalition (YSC) is an organization providing education, empowerment and support to women diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40 years old or younger. As you may already know, I found the support group meetings, at the YSC location here in NYC, to be one of the most helpful resources I made use of during the time that I was preparing for, and recovering from, my surgeries for DCIS.
In January of this year I started volunteering with YSC, through their Adopt A Hospital program (which will soon be re-launched under a different name). I would build relationships with doctor offices to inform them about YSC and provide them with brochures and other information to share with young breast cancer patients who might be interested in learning more about this resource.
YSC is located all across the United States and they have recently launched a State Leader program as a way to reach even more young women affected by breast cancer. I have been asked to be a State Leader for New York. In this new role I will continue to build relationships with health care providers and I will also use my professional skills and personal experiences to find new ways to spread the news about Young Survival Coalition.

I always knew 30 would be a big year for me...I just never imagined breast cancer would be the reason.
How I came to this blog
For as long as I can remember I had been so excited about my 30th birthday. It was going to be a big year for me, I could feel it. I had no idea a breast cancer diagnosis would turn out to be the reason. I was actually told I had "early breast cancer" at 29, about three weeks before my 30th birthday. What I had is called Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), which is also considered "stage 0 breast cancer." While it was caught at the earliest possible stage, and my life was never in immediate danger, I still had to undergo mastectomy, including lymph node removal, and reconstruction. My birthday came and went a couple weeks before my mastectomy. More than once I looked down at the "F 30" on my hospital bracelet and wondered, "where did my 30th birthday go?" This will definitely be an interesting year.
